Over 50s Employability Support Accredited Learning

Who is this Program for?

  • Frontline Practitioners and Frontline Managers.
  • Anyone supporting over 50s individuals who require additional support in addressing their barriers to finding, competing for and sustaining work.
  • Designed for learners who have completed the IEP Accredited Employability Essentials or an IEP recognised equivalent in-house program.

Program Overview

Many over 50s have fallen out of work during the COVID crisis, and job losses have increased disproportionately for this group with the ending of the Government’s furlough scheme (CJRS). The over 50s have historically had worse outcomes from employment support services compared to younger people.

This program aims to change this by helping employability professionals understand the challenges faced by job seekers over the age of 50 and how they can best be supported to re-enter the workforce through personalised support. The course covers a range of issues, from health conditions to caregiving responsibilities, providing a comprehensive understanding of the obstacles that individuals over the age of 50 may encounter when seeking employment, as well as the resources available to help them overcome these challenges.

On completion of the Over 50s Employability Support Accredited Learning Program learners will be issued a Certificate of Achievement from the IEP as evidence of the knowledge and skills gained during the learning programme and a digital badge.

Structure and Timings

Subjects Covered

Understanding Over 50s and Employment

Over 50s make up a third of the workforce – but those who fall out of work are at an increased risk of long-term unemployment. In the past, employment support has not worked well for this group. This module will help you understand some of the facts and statistics around unemployment for the over 50s, and explore the impact of challenges and barriers facing this group. In future modules we will outline ways in which you can appropriately support the over 50s on your caseload into suitable employment.

Skills Support for Over 50s

This module builds on what you have learnt in the previous module about the challenges facing over 50 jobseekers. It will help you understand the barriers over 50s face in seeking work, including confidence, qualifications, and access to training. It will suggest ways you might help over 50s on your caseload in overcoming these barriers.

Over 50s and Employers

This module explains how older workers may feel they are disadvantaged in the recruitment process, from the language used in recruitment adverts to discrimination at interview stage. It will also look at what makes good employment for over 50s, so if you are engaging with employers, you can help them understand what this age group needs.

Over 50s Common Challenges

Over 50s are likely to have additional challenges which will impact on job searching and employment opportunities. In this module we explore these challenges, in particular the common themes of health, caring, and financial need. We also explore how to support people who are experiencing these issues and how to appropriately signpost to support services.

“I thought as a 65-year-old that I would know something of the barriers for older workers, but the course opened my eyes to a much bigger picture. As an employability trainer for Reed in Partnership this course will help me to enrich the course for 50+ jobseekers, that I deliver, beyond my own experience. I feel that I am privileged to work for a company that does not see age as a barrier.”
